“Twice and thrice over, as they say, good is it to repeat and review what is good.”
This book to me is good…infact great. It definitely deserves a continuation of the review started last week😄
The Flatteners of the Earth’s Surface:
. Flattener #3- Workflow Software- the emergence of standardised pipes and protocols that connected everyone’s machines and software applications.
Encouraged standardised business processes for how certain kind of commerce or work would be conducted.
Note: This became the genesis for the flattening of the world, and it came together in the mid-to-late 1990s.
. Flattener #4- Uploading- Harnessing the Power of Communities.
Uploading is, without doubt, becoming one of the most revolutionary form of collaboration in the flat world. More than ever, we can all now be producers, not just consumers.
Variations of uploading include: Community developed software, Blogging😃, Wikipedia👐, Podcasting👏, e-commerce platforms such as eBay, Amazon, and so on.
. Flattener #5- Outsourcing- Y2K- largely epitomised by India- American relationship in Engineering, Medicine, Software Development, among others.
By the late 1990s, Lady Luck pointed towards India in two directions: the fibre-optic bubble started to inflate, linking India with the United States, and the Y2K computer crisis-the so called millennium bug- started gathering on the horizon.
This flattener advocated that any service, call Center, business support operation, or knowledge work that could be digitalised could be sourced globally to the cheapest, smartest, most efficient provider. #Outsourcing.
India’s success story as an example of outsourcing can be summarised in the quote by Louis Pasteur: “Fortune favours the prepared mind.”
. Flattener #6- Offshoring- Running with Gazelles, Eating with Lions.
China as a model for Offshoring: China’s joining the WTO gave a huge boost to this form of collaboration.
An exemplified definition of this flattener is when a company takes on of its factories that is operating in Canton, Ohio, and moves the whole factory offshore to Canton, China.
China’s leaders are much more focused than many of their Western counterparts on how to train their young people in math, science, and computer skills required for success in the flat world.
Note: If Americans, Europeans and the world at large want to benefit from the flattening of the world and the interconnecting of all the markets and knowledge centres, they will all have to run at least as fast as the fastest lion- that suspect is China.
We must conclude with the original African Proverb:
Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning a lion wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle.
When the sun comes up, you better start running.
Wait for it:
We are still warming up in the knowledge of the flatteners. It is interesting to know they are progressive, complementary and knowledge-imbedded.😄
Until next week again great readers…do run like the fastest lions😃💃👐👏 Thank you.
We are nice here:
To our new review readers, check out the commencement post titled ‘How Flat?’ on the blog. Welcome👏🍹😃
